Hey friends,

This week’s episode is a special one — the kind of conversation that feels less like an interview and more like sitting on the porch swapping stories with someone who knows you.

I sat down with Jack Glacken, owner of Today’s Graphics in Philly… and one of my closest friends in this industry. Jack and I go back over two decades, all the way to the early days when digital print was still new, messy, and exciting.

And if you’ve ever been a part of Dscoop (Digital Solutions Cooperative), this one is going to hit home — because Jack and I were right there at the beginning, helping start what became one of the most impactful communities in print.

Grateful you're here,
Larry

A Few Takeaways From This Week

  1. The Dscoop story — how it really started

Not in a garage. Not in a boardroom.

More like… a small room, big ideas, and a whole lot of figuring it out as we went.

And somehow, it turned into a global community built on collaboration instead of competition.

  2. What makes Dscoop different

Jack said it best: in commercial print, you didn’t help your competitors.

In Dscoop? You call someone two hours away with the same customers and say, “Hey — how are you running this?”

That mindset is rare… and it’s powerful.

  3. The truth about leadership and teams

One of my favorite parts of this episode was hearing Jack talk about his team.

He’s not trying to be the smartest guy in the room — he surrounds himself with strong people, listens, and makes decisions with intention.

  4. Service is still the secret weapon

I’ve always believed this: Customers might not always pay your price… but they will always pay for great service.

When you show up, respond, and become valuable — you build customers for life.

  5. The next generation matters

We also talked about bringing young people into the industry — giving them real experiences, letting them learn, and helping them see the opportunity that’s here if they’re willing to work.

That mentorship piece is personal to me, and it’s a big part of why I love doing this show.

A Quick Dscoop Note (Past + Present + What’s Next)

If you tuned in last week, you heard my conversation with Francis McMahon, the man who had the vision for Dscoop in the first place.

Francis didn’t just start a users group. He created a space where competitors became collaborators. Where printers stopped guarding secrets and started sharing ideas.

Jack and I were lucky enough to be there in the early days… but Francis is the one who set the tone. And that tone is still alive today.

And next week, I’ll be sitting down with Betsy Davis, who currently serves on the Dscoop board and continues to help lead the organization forward. Betsy represents the next chapter — carrying that same spirit of collaboration into the future of print.

It’s pretty special when you think about it:

  • The original vision (Francis)

  • The early builders (Jack and many of us)

  • The current leadership (Betsy and the board)

All connected by one community.

And in just one week, we’ll all be together again at this year’s Dscoop Edge Rockies.

If you’re planning to be there — come say hello.
If you’ve never attended — this might be the year to see what real collaboration looks like.

My Book – Business Cards & Shoe Leather

If you haven’t read my book yet, here’s a little about it:

In Business Cards & Shoe Leather, I share how I built a career in commercial printing while navigating the challenges of dyslexia and the realities of being an underdog. It’s filled with humor, hard lessons, and moments of clarity about what matters most: relationships, mentorship, and leading with integrity.

You’ll learn how I co-founded two international business cooperatives and why I believe cooperation will always beat competition.
